Mr. Fazlur Rahim Chowdhury
Chairman Emeritus of HSMM Group of Companies
The journey of his life started in 1947 with his birth in a small village in Hojai, Assam, India. The death of his father burdened him with responsibilities at a very early age. He supported his family and completed his education with support from relatives. Soon he managed to start his own pharmacy. Three years later sensing good opportunities and market potential he entered into the agarwood and agar oil business in 1970. For further expansion of business, he travelled to various parts of Northeast India and neighbouring regions in search of agarwood.
In 1971, he started exploring the Jaribum, Surasangpur and Imphal districts of Manipur, India and stayed there for two years. From 1974-1978, he travelled through Mela - Bhutan, Galampu and Dayfarm. After 1978, he visited Diphu, Dhunseri and Long Silat for promoting the business and stayed in Karbi Anglong (Assam) till 1983. Expanding his business to neighbouring states he visited Mokokchung, Changki, Tuli and Wokha districts of Nagaland from 1988 - 1993. With his disciplined attitude, hard work and consistent efforts he also succeeded in getting forest leases from the Government of Bhutan and Governments of Nagaland, Assam and other states in Northeast India for agarwood exploration. After years of diversified experience, he imparted his knowledge and expertise to his children. Now with combined efforts the HSMM Group is today one of the largest agarwood and oil producing company in Southeast Asia.
