JALUKBARI, Aug 8 – Gauhati University Vice Chancellor Dr Mridul Hazarika, who is currently visiting Lao on invitation from Habib Mohammed Chowdhury, founder chairman and managing director, ASEAN India Business Council, Lao People’s Democratic Republic Chapter, attended the 25th anniversary of ASEAN-India relations at Vientiane on August 7.

Dr Hazarika will also be visiting Cambodia and Vietnam. Prof Noni Gopal Mahanta, Director, South East Asean Studies, Gauhati University, is accompanying him.

The anniversary celebration is being jointly organised by the ASEAN India Business Council Chapter, Lao People’s Democratic Republic Chapter and the Embassy of Republic of India in Lao PDR and supported by Lao National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LNCCI) of Lao PDR.

During his visit Dr Hazarika will also visit universities in Lao PDR to explore collaborative programmes as part of the mandate for the Centre for South East Asean Studies, GU.

The GU VC will also sign an MoU with the National University of Laos and a few other institutions of higher education. The institutes have already agreed for student and staff exchange programmes and one such programme involving 15 students will start after the MoU is signed.

ITANAGAR, Aug 8 – Arunachal Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein has said that the cultural similarity between the people of the ASEAN countries and the North-east should become the fulcrum of friendship and the bedrock of all policies, both diplomatic and economic.

He said this during the celebration of the 25th anniversary of ASEAN-India Dialogue Partnership in Lao People’s Republic capital Vientiane yesterday, an official communique said here today.

Mein said India is on the path to forge a strong partnership with the ASEAN countries under the dynamic and visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Delhi’s Act East Policy will be a game changer for the north-eastern states of India.

Stressing on India’s cultural diversity and the cultural similarities of the North-east with most ASEAN countries, he said this should be reinforced through regular bilateral cultural exchanges.

Mein also called for developing an institutional mechanism in this direction to enhance people-to-people contact and create a platform for developing better understanding and opportunities of economic activities in due course of time, the release said.

He urged the ASEAN leaders to take full benefit of the agreement on trade in goods under the framework agreement on comprehensive economic cooperation between India and the ASEAN countries.

He also proposed to the ASEAN-India Business Council to consider organising a business-to-business meeting in the North-east for greater cooperation and understanding between the two regions.

Mein also highlighted the diverse tribal culture, immense potential in tourism, horticulture and hydro power sectors of Arunachal Pradesh.

He invited the ASEAN to look at investment in infrastructure development such power evacuation as Arunachal Pradesh is also known as the powerhouse of India.

He called for early re-opening of the historic Stilwell or Ledo Road that starts from Assam and passes through Arunachal Pradesh and Myanmar and culminates at Kunming in China.

To commemorate the 25th anniversary, ASEAN-India Business Council (AIBC) in collaboration with the Federation of the Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) and other bodies organized the ASEAN – India BizTech Expo and Conference with the theme ‘Bridging Borders Through Business’ in Kuala Lumpur Malaysia recently where Chowdhury was honoured.

 

 “I felt exceptionally blessed to get this honour. However, receiving this award has only made me more determined and motivated to accomplish my set goals,” said Chowdhury who was born and brought up in Assam’s Hojai.
 
Chowdhury who is settled in Laos is the founder chairman of HSMM Group of Companies in Laos which has emerged to be the largest Agarwood and Agar based Product’s Company in South East Asia.
 
Over the years the governments of ASEAN and India have taken concrete measures to strengthen economic relations, especially the establishment of the ASEAN-India Free Trade Area. 
 
“The governments must be commended for the positive actions taken to strengthen economic ties. It is now an opportunity for the private sector through the ASEAN-AIBC to take the lead in raising the level of trade and investment flows. The AIBC has been organizing regular business activities to enhance networking between the businesses in India and ASEAN,” Chowdury added.
